In 2016, we embarked on an exciting project with the construction of a new Williams 38. This was a takeoff of our Stanley 38. Like all of our Stanley lines, this model was popular in large part because of its attractive Downeast style.
A customer was looking to combine that classic look with a speedy power package. We teamed up with Doug Zurn of Zurn Yacht Design in Marblehead, Massachusetts. Doug created a modern modified V underbody that would meld with the profile of a typical Stanley lobster boat above the waterline.
The result is Williams 38. We built the hull on a strong back with station molds, full cored sandwich construction, and vinyl ester resin throughout the laminate. This was mated with a standard Stanley 38 molded cabin top.
Then, it was finished inside in the traditional Herreshoff style. Antique white NidaCore bulkheads and varnished mahogany trim the forecastle. Deeply varnished teak creates a beautiful, relaxing pilothouse with custom furniture, signature seating, and helm console.
Doug designed the hull with the latest technologies in mind, including twin integrated propulsion and dynamic control systems, along with noise and vibration reduction systems. The modern planing underbody achieves cruising speeds in the 30s and a top speed of 40 knots. Even at top speeds, the ride is comfortable. The boat goes up on plane to eliminate the bumps and jolts of a choppy sea.
